April 19th - Law and Grace

Here is what the Bible says to me about law and grace, in a nutshell:

The LAW of God…

“Then Hilkiah answered and said…I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the LORD…Now it happened, when the king heard the words of the Law, that he tore his clothes…and said great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD." (2 Chronicles 34:15-21)

Hilkiah the priest gave King Josiah the Law of the Lord he had found in the run down Temple. Josiah read it and said something along these lines "Oh crap we’re toast…we have not obeyed those 613 laws for years. I am going to tear off my clothes and beg God for mercy".

"Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness." ... "all have sinned....the wages of sin is death...for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life." (1 John 3:4; Romans 3:23; 6:23; 2 Corinthians 3:6)

The GRACE of God has replaced the harsh penalties found in the letter of the Law…

“The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all humanity…now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been made known…for ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and ALL are justified freely by His GRACE through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of His blood…so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus...it is by GRACE you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the GIFT of God...the wages of sin is death, but the FREE GIFT of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ the Lord.” (Titus 2:11; Romans 3:21-26; Ephesians 2:8-10; Romans 6:23)

The letter of the Law kills humanity because we cannot keep it perfectly. But God loves humanity anyway and sent Jesus to die on the cross to atone for sins.

"He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world." (1 John 2:2)

Sonetime after humans die, Jesus will resurrected them into glorious spiritual bodies like Jesus now has and grant them immortal life - all under His control.

"He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like His own, using the same power with which He will bring everything under His control." (Philippians 3:21)

When humans have faith in the good news of the grace of God, they say “thank you Jesus”. Then, in appreciation, they clean up their life as best they can and tell their spouses, children and grandchildren about what God has graciously done for all of them. Humans who have faith in God are at peace with Him and no longer fear the letter of the Law which condemned humanity to death.

The Apostle Paul summarizes as follows:

"So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to Him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent His own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving His Son as a sacrifice for our sins. He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us who are not walking according to our sinful nature but according to the Spirit. Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the spirit think about things that please the spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never obeys the law of God, and it never will. That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God." (Romans 8:1-8)
